Poppin Tags

This is somewhat unrelated to class, but quite related to pop culture. I picked up the Daily News two days ago only to be very annoyed. The article on the first page Is titled Poppin Tags and it's about thrift shopping. It talks about how there has been a significant rise in goodwill shoppers since the song "Thrift Shop" by Mackelmore came out. It praises college students for going off the mainstream and buying used clothing. I felt that the article acted as if goodwill hasn't been around since 1933. I have been making regular trips to goodwill ever since I can remember, and have always loved it. You can find so many cool things! It's literally the greatest place in the world.
I just find it peculiar that the majority of people never considered going to goodwill or other thrift shops until Mackelmore thought it was cool. In the song he basically just talks about how he loves going to thrift shops and buying your grandpa's clothes and how cheap they are. The song isn't that good in my opinion, but it's ridiculously popular. Therefor, so is thrift shopping, I guess.
Why can't anyone be original?

  1. I think making thrift shopping is VERY original. Can you name another song that glorifies Thrift Shopping? A celebrity or singer/rapper that talks about buying cheap clothes? Yeah, Goodwill has been around for a while, but Macklemore** isn't saying it's a new concept, however, he is making it a new trend, and a very positive one.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have the #1 song in the country be glorifying helping less fortunate people through a good cause then another song about bitches and hoes and money. Also, remember that Macklemore is an UNSIGNED artist. He has no label that promotes his music. The fact that someone with NO agenda or publicity has turned this in to a fad is incredible to me.
