Sports and the common person

Many people, mostly males, become engulfed in the world of sports. Why is this? I believe it is because the mas number of media resources we have at our fingertips. ESPN is basically a monopoly in media and the world of sports news. They now have two cable channels that constantly talk about nothing but sports and have a ticker at the bottom of the screen for 24 hours straight. I believe that this along with males believeing they can live through their favorite athletes vicariously goes into our obsession with sports.

I noticed that even the analysts believe they know more about the game than the professional athlete who studies it. Don't get me wrong, I love sports just as much as the next person but find that watching sports as entertainment is not enough for most people. They want to have arguments and boast that they are the smartest person about a sport or team or represent their team with vast amounts of apparel and accesories like license plate frames or posters. What makes us so invested in the world of sports.

Many people who love sports once played them in grade school or even in college. The idea of living vicariously through one's favorite athletes appeal to a lot of people because even though in real life they lacked the skill to become a pro athlete, now they can research into every training day of an athlete and even their diet regiment by using the internet and therefore can believe they are a part of their favorite athlete's life by somewhat pretending it is theres. Think of it like World of Warcraft only the fan cannot control what their athlete does but only act like their choices are the best and follow them with no regret. Then the fans gets invested in their athlete's team and then they buy the team's apparel. Then since they bought the apparel they must be educated on their team so they keep up the news about the team. Then they have to watch every game because they don't want to be called out by their other sport friend fanatics.

Its a vicious cycle in which ESPN gains quite the profits because it is the most easily accessible sport news websites.
