Princess Culture

I really enjoyed the class discussion about the princess culture, and it really opened my eyes up to what young girls are being subjected to through television and other media sources. These media outlets are putting distorted views about how to dress and act in to the minds of young girls all over the world. The show I have the biggest issue with is "Toddlers with Tiaras." The parents of these children are basically using their daughters to live out a fantasy that they really want for themselves. At least that is the way I see it. Most of them are basically teaching their daughters that dressing up like a princess, and wearing make-up at the age of 3 and 4 years is a normal thing. All they are doing is giving their daughters a distorted view of the female gender that will probably stick with them most of their lives. The moms on the show are definitely not being good role models. All they are doing is putting a snobby, I'm better than you attitude in to the minds of their kids. Not by just putting make-up on their kids either, by what they are teaching their children about competition and how to deal with defeat. Some of these mothers get upset when their child loses, and throw a fit! That's not setting a good example of clean competition to your child. I know shows like Toddlers with Tiaras can be entertaining to watch, but we really need to start thinking about the messages some of these shows are teaching young girls.
