Mis-representation

After watching the Mis-representation video and listening to the discussion after the class I just felt bad. Women in our society are under way too much pressure from the media to conform to an unattainable standard, and I can't help but feel partially responsible for being a part of that system.  While I am a guy who believes that women are to be treated with love and respect, no matter what they look like, I am realizing sadly just how much of a minority guys like me are.  Unfortunately the fix to this is not as simple as changing the message the media is feeding us.  Because the  media is, as we have discussed so many times in class, driven by profit the best way to change the message it is sending is by changing how we, as men, view women.  I really do believe that if more guys started treating women with respect, and spoke out on behalf of women, not just because they feel obligated to but because they truly believe that women deserve to be viewed as people instead of objects of desire then the media will react.  The media gives us, for the most part, that we want to see and if we, as men, view women with the respect they deserve the media will be forced to react and change the image they are feeding us.

Maybe its just be be disgusted by how women are portrayed and compared to an impossible standard, but I know I am not the only guy that is.  Maybe I am being overly optimistic, but I don't see any other solution other than convincing other men to treat and view women with respect and slowly, man by man, change the world.  Lofty goals I know, but I can hope can't I?  I plan on being a dad someday, and I don't want my daughters to grow up in this kind of media environment...
