Our class discussion about how women comedians are not funny
was really intriguing because I do believe in that statement that women
comedians are not funny. A lot of the women comedians that I have seen try the
dry humor approach, which sometimes can be ineffective. In my opinion dry humor
is funny when the comedian really emphasize the sarcasm. This can be done with
body movements and long pauses in between statements. My favorite kind of
comedy is slapstick and screwball, which is another reason why I might not like
female comedians. Watching the skit from Saturday Night Live with Jesse
McCartney made me chuckle but it was just that. I do believe that in our
society men are more likely to be funny because it is a characteristic that
women are attracted to. Not many guys look for women with a good sense of humor
because other characteristics like physical attractiveness and intelligence
have more importance in our society. Guys often think that they are really
funny and when they meet a woman who is funnier than them makes them feel
emasculated. There has been a strong push made by female comedians like Jesse
McCartney, Amy Poehler, Tina Faye and Ellen Degeneres that might change our
perceptions about which gender is funnier for the future but as of right now
men are funnier than women.
