Stand Up and Eat Healthy
In our discussion about food in culture in class on Tuesday, I noticed that it was very hard to come to a happy medium in the world of food. We talked about the cycle which was summed up by saying the "invent of fast and cheap food has led to a
decline in family incomes so all we can afford is fast and cheap food." In American society, everything moves as fast as possible. Everyone is so busy and tied up in their own lives that everything else seems irrelevant on a day to day basis. Food, next to water and sleep, is the most essential part of our lives. So, of course, as Americans we want to get it as convenient as possible to fit in to their hectic schedules. But, this need for convenience has lead people to put food in their bodies that is not only terribly cheap, but terrible for their bodies. But on the upside, Pollan, an author of one of the articles discussed in class, mentions "how young people are attracted to this non-conventional political movement about food, community, identity and pleasure." This is a statement I completely agree with. America's youth loves to have a cause to stand behind and support because it gives them purpose and meaning. I feel that standing behind making a healthier nation is a brilliant and essential idea. With the childhood obesity rate being so high, it's so important to take action and educate today's youth on how to be healthier and smarter about their food choices.
