Are Women Funny?

Many people like to assume that women are not funny. Being a woman myself, it is not unusual that I disagree with this assumption. I do not agree that men are generally funnier than women. I just believe that men being funny is more acceptable. Women are not expected to speak the same way as men or tell the same jokes.  A joke that got a million laughs from a man could get zero from a women, simply because it was coming out of a woman's mouth. This is not to say that everyone believes this. Some people will agree that women are funny, but the majority of people, mainly men, will say that women try to be funny.
Nowadays, the majority of women in comedy are beautiful. This is a huge change from years ago when the only funny women were those who were overweight or lesbians. What is with the stereotyping of women? If a woman is overweight or a lesbian today she is no longer funny, but if a woman is beautiful she can pass as hilarious. The way we perceive women in the media is what is causing this belief. Every woman must have a perfect body and look beautiful or she needs not attempt comedy. My question is, why is this not the same for a man?
I do not see a weight or sexual orientation test for a man before he tries his hand at comedy. Men are considered funny with any look. As long as they can be funny they are in. Why can't women be funny and be in? I realize there are some women who do not look perfect on the outside that have made it big through comedy. I know that every single female comedian is not perfect. What I am saying is, the majority women have to try a lot harder with their looks to be considered funny.
Shows that have funny female leads, such as modern family, do not get the reaction from men saying "she's so funny"! The reaction they get from men is "she's so hott." I have seen this first hand from many of my male friends. Some people reading this might say that I'm full of it, that's fine, if that is what you believe. Some people may think that women in comedy have it just as easy as men. Some people may think that it has nothing to do with looks, it is simply about who is being funnier. However, I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who do not agree with the fact that women must try harder and look better to be considered funny are men.
