A few weeks ago in class, we learned about gender. One of
our discussions involved women in comedy. We discussed whether or not women were as
funny as men. The author of the article alleged that women were not as funny as
men. Many female comediennes were appalled by his judgment and set out to prove
him wrong. I feel that women are judged harsher just because they are women.
Women have always been judged harder than men. For centuries, it has been
harder to be a woman, and then it has been to be a man. They have to accomplish more in order to be
regarded as successful. It has been a rather recent development, that they are
being regarded as equals. I feel that women could be as funny as men. Many women
have achieved this status already. Comediennes such as Ellen DeGeneres have
reached this level of equality. I feel that things that are crude and inappropriate
aren't funny. A person such as Bill Cosby is funny without being crude. The
clips shown in class of women comediennes were not funny because they
relied on crude humor. I feel that if Melissa McCarthy was not doing things
that were crude, then I could consider her funny. Until then, I do not consider
her funny. She could be a funny person, but many feel that she relies too much
on her appearance to be funny. The question could be would she be as funny if
it weren’t for her size.
