Brand Families

I think that the idea of branding is huge, as we discussed in class today, there are brands everywhere we look and they affect everyone in society in some way or another. Something that I was thinking about after class today is how there are, in some situations, brands within brands which complicate things even more. For example, MTV is a brand but within it there are multiple other things that I would consider brands as well. "Jersey Shore" became somewhat of a brand in its time on Television. I feel like there is some aspect of it EVERYWHERE, they have t-shirts, they have sold the seasons on DVD,  and there have even been spin off shows from it as well. I think that branding can become this chain of never ending brands, within brands, within brands if we let it get to that point. That being said, this is a very good marketing technique, because the people that bought into the original brand will continue to buy into the new brands, its kind of like the brands are having babies.

This picture is just my way of getting my idea across, kind of a brand family tree. Of course this is just on example of the idea that branding often can become a chain of different brands. Really this could happen with any T.V. station and the shows that they produce and air on their channel. I think that is why often times brands are very careful about what shows they pick up and what shows they keep on the air in any given season, not only because they are ultimately trying to make money but they want to protect there brands reputation of what kinds of shows they air to the public.
