Funny girl = awesome girl

I don’t even think this discussion is necessary because obviously women are funny. If men, or even women, think they can’t be…. I have no words. Why would men be the only ones who could make a funny joke? Do people believe it is because they are more masculine? I honestly just don’t understand the prejudice against funny females. If anything, I feel it’s just men feeling inferior when they encounter a funny female. When you are the one cracking the jokes, you are basically the one controlling the conversation, which I guess scares guys. I’m no sure why though. Do all guys want a brainless girl to laugh along with their pointless jokes? I’d hardly even call that a conversation. I’d like to think I’m the girl that is always making stupid jokes, but after hearing how many women were afraid to even crack a joke surprised me. Especially, with all the funny females on television now a days, how can you not feel inspired to just joke whenever you can. For all those men that feel inferior of funny girl, my first question… why? Secondly, wouldn’t you want to be able to joke with you romantic partner/friend and not just be joking to fake laugh. Girls, if you are afraid to make a joke, especially around guys, don’t be! If anything you will look like you actually have a fun personality, since when is that a bad thing? Oh, that’s right, its not a bad thing! So props to girls who aren’t afraid of being funny!

Virtual world vs. real world

Today I class I had mixed feelings about video games and how they could impact the saving the world. Growing up with a brother I have seen first hand how they have impacted his life. He was into the war games, almost all of them. He would sit hours in front of the television. We would talk through a headset to his friends of people he didn’t even know. It literally consumed almost all his time after school. Being in only middle school I saw this obsession as unhealthy. I didn’t see any good outcome of gaming. I believe mainly because my brother, I am opposed to think that these video games that took away my time to spend with him, are anything but healthy. Even if he was working on how to conserve water, of live without oil, I would still feel the same way. These unreal worlds are taking away from the reality we are in right now. Putting less effort into reality can have bad consequences, in my opinion. These worlds are fake, so even if they are helping solve problems I do not think they are the most appropriate way of doing it. We should be facing these problems face on, not through a computer or television. So I believe the efforts going into the makings of these game ‘world saving’ games are a waste. Maybe we should be taking the time, money, and brain power to actually be doing something for the world. I do think these games mean well, but don’t know if they are actually doing any good.

My eyes are now open

The film “Food Inc.” that we watched in class Friday was yet another wake up call to what food I eat everyday. Actually seeing the animals living conditions shocked me. I have always heard how animals are mistreated before they are killed but never truly thought about it. The cows were in groups of thousands, crowed and standing in their own fesses most of the time. Not only that, but they are fed corn to save money even though cows are made to eat grass. This is probably one of the most ignorant decisions that I’ve ever heard. We have no problem paying over the top prices for clothes and cars but when it comes to our food we always are trying to cut costs. Isn’t food be what we are putting the most money into? It’s not like we can live of a new designer handbag… Our proprieties are obviously misconstrued within the United States and I don’t know what we can do to change the public eye. These cows we are being treated like dirt and they are the things going into our bodies to stay alive. I say our food sound be our main priority and NOTHING should come in the way of that, especially money. The fact that this little money (time, focus) is put into the process of making our food only makes it clearer I need to start taking control of my food choices. Since this realization I found myself not going near meat. I’m not sure if this is going to last or if this is a good thing but for now, I consider myself a newfound vegetarian.

Now disgusted with our food system

After watching the video, “What’s wrong with out food system” I began to think about the foods I eat. I know when I think of getting food the two words come to mind is fast and tasty. Usually, I would find myself going through a drive-thru without even thinking when I am hungry or just grabbing a burger and fries from the closest restaurant. I would only worry about how long it would take for the food to get out to me, or how it tasted. I never considered what the food I was eating was doing to my body or how it was made. I believe, like many people do, we are raised to not think of those things when picking what to eat. Even when eating food bought from the super market, that is seeming healthy, can still be harmful to your body. I honestly don’t remember the last time I had food knowing where it came form, especially meat. Now that I think about my food I eat, I am repulsed.

Living on campus, in the dorms, I believe it is even harder to try to eat organic, or know where any of my food comes from. Not having a car on campus I am forced to eat at the supplied cafeterias on campus. I have not ran into a place that offers these organic alterative or information on the whereabouts they got this food.  

Before watching this little kid shine light on this controversial subject in class, I would have stayed in this sheltered bubble many of us live in. I am glad my eyes are now open to these issues, although with it in mind every time I eat, I wish I didn’t come to this realization.

War in the media

All the talk about war in mainstream media really got me thinking. I had never noticed before how much war is incorporated in our everyday life. In the news, social media, and video games, we seem to be not only consumed but also entertained with it.

I began to notice when war was incorporated in my everyday life. While I was watching The Walking Dead I logged onto a page provided by AMC that streamed discussions and pictures while the show was being broadcasted. Ads began to show up on this page from time to time throughout the show. I soon noticed some were advertising the American Navy. Not only did they try to persuade you to join but also incorporated zombie slogans to catch your attention. Quotes like “Walkers can’t catch us” and “Forces of evil meet global force for good” were shown on these ads. The most shocking part was that I wouldn’t have even noticed how integrated war was everywhere if we hadn’t just discussed it class.

I believe our obsession today with war is incredibly wrong. Our obsession with hearing news of it on television is really strange. Why do we want to be updated every minute with loss? I feel the same way toward video games.  We are growing up with this interest in killing. Not only are the video games like Black Ops and Call of Duty are disturbing, but almost mocking the Americans fighting for our country everyday. This virtual world is also leading many to believe, in my opinion, that they can easily do what many are doing in the war just because they score high scores within their game. This is what might the most disturbing aspect to me.

Staying True to my Childhood

Barbie.....
That one name is known by young girls all over the world, even some young boys. I grew up with Barbies. Owning almost everything Barbie, name it and I had it. From the Barbie dream house, to the perfect outfit combinations that would make any girl jealous. I remember even forcing my little brother to play Barbies with me (although I remember not having to beg much). Before we talked about my favorite childhood toy in class I never thought negatively of Barbies. I was very surprised to see how many people believed those dolls created an unreachable image for girls. Personally, I never felt like I had to match up to my pretty dolls nor did I feel inferior of them. They were, and still are just toys to me and this upset against them being too 'perfect' for girls to see is just silly to me. Barbies were meant, in my opinion, simply for fun for young kids. I refuse that they were created for unrealistic expectations of girls. Truthfully, many know that there children would not enjoy playing with a doll that was unattractive looking. The good looks and stylish outfits of Barbie are the reason that this doll became so popular among little girls.

Even though some rather convincing arguments are made on why Barbie gives girls, as well as women, an unrealistic expectation, I'm still staying loyal to Barbie. In my eyes, she is my childhood, and I refused to believe she was meant to make me feel I have to look just like her. I guess once a Barbie fan, always a Barbie fan.

Hipster Hating

Today in class we discussed the culture of "cool". I seemed to have the most opinions when it came to  'hipster hating'. The facts of poseurs or real hipsters.

I believe many hipsters are just people trying too hard to be unique, this causing them to be far from it. Like we said in class, "they pay a lot to look poor". This desire to be seen different than everyone else drives people to do whatever is deemed 'cool' in the hipster community. Maybe even causing people to do what they don't even like to do. Whether it be spending hours searching for bands no none has heard of, spending lots of money on clothes that look like they are worth nothing, or drinking organic gross drinks. Even traveling to social media, some filter everything they post on the internet to make sure it fits the hipster outline.

Many trying so hard to be different don't realize that they aren't in a counterculture like they would like to believe but in just another culture (and a large culture at that).


Although, with that, I do believe some people do honestly fit in this category of culture in their everyday living without even trying. But, I do believe there probably aren't very many. Like Frank expressed through his ideas, if you try to hard to be unique you end up being like everyone else.

Even though it's almost impossible to just 'be yourself' I hope some people realize these 'unique' actions usually won't make you seem cooler just because you think you are different than everyone else. And if this is you, without trying, congratulations you are a real hipster.
