I thought that the “Wii Shall
Overcome” article and Jane McGonigal’s Ted talk were pretty interesting and
made some good points, but I just can’t say that I agree with what she was
trying to convey. I mean, video gamers solving major world problems? In my
opinion, it all just seems very far-fetched.
I think
everything that McGonigal discussed was great. Games that are fun and are
related to major world problems seems like a great idea, but the thought of it
making a difference is just not realistic. People who are true “gamers” spend
so much time playing video games that I do not think that they would be able to
separate real life from their life in the game. Would they really be able to
take the time to figure out how to solve world problems? Or would they be too
caught up with the virtual life they have in the game? Just because someone
plays Farmville, it does not mean that they are going to go out and start their
own farm tomorrow. Gamers have even said themselves that they waste a ton of
time playing video games. So, if they are so busy playing these games, when are
they going to find the time to actually go out and make a difference?
In order to make a difference in
this world, what we need are motivated people who are go-getters. When I think
of people who sit around playing video games all the time, I think of the
opposite type of person. So I just have difficulty agreeing with the points
that Jane McGonigal makes.
