Poppin Tags
This is somewhat unrelated to class, but quite related to pop culture. I picked up the Daily News two days ago only to be very annoyed. The article on the first page Is titled Poppin Tags and it's about thrift shopping. It talks about how there has been a significant rise in goodwill shoppers since the song "Thrift Shop" by Mackelmore came out. It praises college students for going off the mainstream and buying used clothing. I felt that the article acted as if goodwill hasn't been around since 1933. I have been making regular trips to goodwill ever since I can remember, and have always loved it. You can find so many cool things! It's literally the greatest place in the world.
I just find it peculiar that the majority of people never considered going to goodwill or other thrift shops until Mackelmore thought it was cool. In the song he basically just talks about how he loves going to thrift shops and buying your grandpa's clothes and how cheap they are. The song isn't that good in my opinion, but it's ridiculously popular. Therefor, so is thrift shopping, I guess.
Why can't anyone be original?

Kitchen of the Future
I would like to start off this blog by saying that Chili's Bar and Grill is ran by the devil.
After class Tuesday, and talking about knowing where our food comes from and talking about fast vs. slow food I feel it is appropriate that I share what is happening in the Chili's "slow food" franchise. They just came out with their new system of cooking food that they like to call the Kitchen of the Future. Basically the food goes into this giant microwave looking contraption and goes on a conveyer belt that takes it through all the steps of artificially grilling it. They no longer use an actual grill, but they do still have a flat top. Whoopdy-doo. It's awful. I feel like it was bad enough that the "fresh veggies" were simply put in plastic baggies and microwaved, but now even the burgers, steaks, and fajitas are treated the same?!
It's all about money. This way the food can be cooked much quicker - because a 10 minute wait for a frozen burger was too long before? And with quicker ticket times, they can get people in and out faster, and therefor generate more business and more revenue. On top of that they can get away with fewer cooks in the kitchen that they have to pay.
And what makes it worse is how they advertise their healthier menu options - basically meaning no cheese or ranch dressing heaped on top - and then toss the damn thing in a microwave. I feel that you just can't trust anything. Chili's will probably never advertise this kitchen of the future idea, so no one will ever know how low quality their food is and will probably continue going. And then other restaurants will conform to this system to keep up with competition and then before you know it, sit down restaurants are basically fast food restaurants with free refills.

Why do I love rap music?
After the hyper-masculinity lecture that focused so much on Tupac, I asked myself, "Heather, why do you subject yourself to this?" The lyrics are so degrading to women, and half the time just flat out ridiculous..cough cough.. Lil Wayne... But seriously, sometimes I literally laugh out loud at what type of lyrics are making millions of dollars. It's upsetting.
This isn't the first time I have asked myself this question, but it gave me a reason to think deeper on the matter.
I love rap music. I can't explain it. I love Jay-Z and Biggie Smalls and Kendrick Lamar, the list goes on. I love being able to rap along with the songs and blast it in my car down campus, and I can't really explain it.
After this lecture I started thinking that maybe I try to use rap music to counter my hyper-femininity. I've come to terms with it. I love dressing up and being girly and all that crap. So maybe I'm using nasty rap songs to cover up some of that - as kind of a shocker. Haha it sounds so ridiculous as I type it out. But it's a good theory. I don't want people (boys) to think I'm super sensitive or that I'm like every prissy, bitchy girl they've ever met before. So maybe I feel like being into this genre of music helps out with that. .. Maybe.

Matthew Shepard
We went over this topic a while ago, but I still wanted to do a blog about it.
The Matthew Shepard case. Before I go on, I am fully against what happened to him.
My issue with what we went over in class is this: why does America feeling like what happened to him was wrong need to also mean that America changes it's whole stance on homosexuality?
No one deserves to be lured out of a bar, beaten, and left for dead. No one, regardless of their sexual orientation, race, political views, for picking their nose and eating it, etc. It's just wrong, and any right minded person can see that. But that doesn't mean that we now have to agree with his personal lifestyle.
The fact of the matter is that people are being murdered everyday for a multitude of reasons, and it's sickening. That's what people are upset about - not the fact that it happened to a gay man. It happens to all different types of people. It's a real problem. We need to start loving everyone as an equal. Yes, we should accept that everyone has their own lifestyle, but we don't have to agree with it.

Princess Culture

Yesterday in class we discussed princess culture and how it affects not only young girls, but older girls and even boys. I find this topic very interesting because at the time we receive these messages they seem completely normal and wonderful. And our parents see nothing wrong with them because they too, grew up watching similar if not the same stories.
The problem is that these movies disguise the provocative messages they tell. They make many of the characters extremely brave, strong willed, or intelligent. Why then, must they dress them in provocative clothing and give them huge boobs and beautiful hair? It is ridiculous. I am not saying that it is because of these movies that I am somewhat of a girlie girl, but I did take interest in wearing make up and dresses and high heals when I was about ten. And I started liking boys when I was in kindergarten. I don't know what the normal age to start liking boys is, but that seems so young when I think about it now.
I remember I saw a thing on some news show once that did a study on Beauty and the Beast and it was pretty disturbing. They were asking the little girls what they would do if someone were treating them the way Beast was treating Bella. And they all said they would do what she did and just keep being nice to him until he liked her. How terrible! I know it is just a movie, but it is showing girls - probably not on purpose - that guys will eventually change and be who you want them to be if you suck up to them and let them walk all over you. Eh, no.
Personally, I feel much less affected by these types of things now. Yeah, I still care a lot about clothes and love getting dressed up, but if I have to go without wearing make up that is fine. I will go out to the bars in a T-shirt, I don't care that much. I like what we talked about in class yesterday a lot, and I feel like it is giving me advice for if I ever have kids.
