Going Vegetarian ... Or not

The last couple days have been eye opening to me. After watching "Food Inc." in class on Thursday, I have started to question my food choices. I was greatly disturbed by the film, physically and mentally. I've always known that there are poor practices when it comes to growing or raising what we eat, but I have never thought twice about eating it. This all changed Thursday...

The movie made me really second guess my eating habits. I have always ate whatever I wanted when I wanted and never thought twice about it and love my meat and potatoes for dinner every night, but now that I have seen the poor conditions that these animals are raised in and the poor working conditions for the employees, I'm starting to think about how I can change my eating habits.

Following the film, I was so disgusted that I could not eat for the rest of the day. My diet is typically full of chicken and beef, but after seeing the chickens being injected with steroids to the point that their legs couldn't even support their body weight or the amount of e coli being spread by cows eating corn, I decided I would keep the intake of those proteins to a minimum. This called for a personal challenge, to try and go vegetarian for the weekend!

It started out alright, I had no problem eating all fresh vegetables the rest of Thursday and the first part of Friday, however, Friday night was a different story. I went out with my friends to get some dinner and it was very very difficult to find something that didn't include meat that sounded appetizing to me. I ended up giving in and ordering a steak...

Although I don't have the willpower to make a large lifestyle choice such as becoming a vegan or vegetarian, thanks to "Food, Inc." I am now going to think more critically about what I am eating, where it came from and the process the food has gone through. I will aim to buy locally or stick to organic and fresh food instead of processed foods. It may be more expensive, but it is healthier and could potentially effect the way large corporations raise their crops, process their food and treat their employees.

I aim to make a difference in the way I eat... We'll see how this goes!
