Weight Loss through Social Media

I LOVED the readings for today's lecture. Not only were the articles easy to read but we can all relate to the topic of food. Not all of us play video games or are avid sports media consumers but we do all consume food...at least I hope we all do.

The article about the guy who tracked his weight loss via Twitter stuck me especially. As I read it I found so many similarities with an experience I had this past summer. Last June, I decided I would start the Insanity weight loss program. I had to REALLY work myself up to finally get motivated to do the first workout. The way I did this was through... *drum roll*... Facebook. Yeah. It got to the point where unless I told myself I'd post pictures on Facebook I wouldn't do the workout. I figured this would motivate me to get through the program.

At the time, of course, I didn't think of the psychology behind all this. I wanted an audience to follow my progress and for about a month it worked out really well. I had lost 15ish pounds and felt so good! People were commenting on my daily pictures (my self esteem obviously was raised extensively) so it kept me continuously motivated. Unfortunately, in July I took a week long trip to Cincinnati for the World Choir Games with University Singers thinking I would just start right back with Insanity when I got back. It didn't work out that way.

All in all, I better understand why I did what I did with Facebook. I'm thinking I'm gonna try something similar again once school lets out...if I can work myself up, that is :).
