I believe that studying popular culture is essential in order to fully understand the human race and why we do what we do. The book refers to popular culture as being comprised elements, objects, actions and events of everyday life that influence people to believe and behave in a certain way. In order to understand why people do what it is they do, we must first look at popular culture and understand how it affects us.
Besides trying to learn how popular culture affects the way we think and act, it is important to learn about popular culture because it is so relevant in our daily lives. So many times a day, people make references to what they see on television or what they read in magazines or other forms of media. In order to be connected to the world we live in, we must have some knowledge of popular culture. This is not to say that we should allow it to consume our thoughts and actions, but we should be aware of it in order to understand some happenings that occur in our world.
For example, if you were not familiar or exposed to popular culture, you would have no idea why so many people (especially girls) were freaking out about some wedding. In reality, you weren't only missing out on a fancy wedding, but history in the making as Kate Middleton married Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
By studying popular culture, it allows us not only to stay informed on what is happening in the world around us, but also allows us to view directly how we are affected by it. Popular culture affects society both positively and negatively and it is important to realize each way it can be done.
