Talking about women in comedy in
class reminded me of this past summer when there was a controversy over
comedian Adam Carolla saying that women aren’t funny. He made snarky comments
about how female writers are always the least funny and they only get hired
because people feel obligated to hire them. I remember this really bothering me
because, let’s be honest, I can’t remember ever hearing anyone say that Adam
Carolla is funny. Before this controversy, most people had no idea who he even
was. Along with this, it seemed as though it was him against the world on this
topic.
That’s what both funny and
interesting to me. It always seems to be the least funny people who say things
about women not being funny, while male comedians who are actually respected
are always there to defend female comedians.
So how about this. Let’s have
Christopher Hitchens or Adam Carolla write an episode of 30 Rock and see how
many people find it funny. Oh wait, I already know the answer: Probably no one.
Tina Fey, however, is arguably one of the best writers in comedy today.
So, why are we making this whole
“are women funny?” thing a controversy? It shouldn’t be. It’s just a couple of
males who are jealous that they are not as funny as female comedians who are
probably thinking, “maybe if I say something about how women aren’t as funny as
me, people will believe it”. Well guess what Adam Carolla....no matter how many
times you try to convince people that women aren’t funny, they won’t start
thinking that you are even the slightest bit funny.
So that’s my spiel. We shouldn’t be
listening to people who aren’t funny to make us question who may or may not be
funny. Because we already know it’s not Christopher Hitchens or Adam Carolla.
Simple as that.
