The discussion on Tuesday about media framing was what really caught my attention. Especially when it came to how differently men and women were framed in the media. I immediately thought to a few instances I had read about regarding women in the media and how they're questioned during interviews.
Hillary Clinton refused to answer which designer she was wearing that day stating, "Would you ever ask a man that question?" The reporter replied, "Probably not. Probably not." And Hillary is just one example! There's also Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, and Anne Hathaway.
Scarlett Johansson is asked about her diet for The Avengers, Emma Stone points out that she gets asked about her clothes or make up while co-star Andrew Garfield gets asked "...interesting, poignant questions..." because he is a man. Anne Hathaway is asked about how she got ready to fit the Catwoman suit, and in another interview how she prepared for her role in Les Miserbles. It was known already that she was on a starvation diet, but she was still asked about it repeatedly and finally refused to answer because she didn't want to promote that kind of unhealthy dieting to young girls.
The point is that the media is giving these interviews to women, but their main focus is always on something superficial such as their body, or what clothes they chose to wear that day. They're framing women as nothing more than bodies to admire, and I think that is incredibly sad.
